About Havafeed

In its simplest form, Havafeed is a not for profit charity that helps the Gold Coast Community by providing assistance and relief with hot meals and food parcels. But Havafeed is much more than that. For almost 30 years, Havafeed has been helping support, guide and give a feeling of purpose to over 300,000 individuals. On the 16th of September 1994, Havafeed was born. What started as a simple conversation among friends soon became an idea and then a reality.

At Havafeed, we help disadvantaged families, pensioners, the homeless and victims of domestic violence. In Queensland alone, every month, 230,000 households receive assistance from food relief organisations like Havafeed. Plus, with the ever increasing cost of living, this number is estimated to keep growing. At Havafeed, we are here to help you. No matter your background or current situation, you will be welcome.

The Story of Havafeed

What began as a conversation among friends who had recently lost their jobs and were finding it hard to make ends meet soon became an idea and a reality. On the 16th of September 1994, Havafeed was born, and it all started with a van and a slice of bread. Lindsay and Robyn bought a van using the money from a cheque that Robyn received from her late grandmother. A local business donated some loaves of bread, and we began handing them out.

When thinking about a name for the charity, we wanted it to have some meaning and incorporate who we are and what we do into it. At Havafeed, our mission is to provide hope and guidance to everyone that walks through the door. This is how the name came about. H for hope, the hope we have that the support we deliver will enrich their lives in times of uncertainty. V is for victory and what we want our recipients to strive for and one day lead them to victory. We also knew we wanted to incorporate food. So, we put all three elements together, and we got HAVAFEED.

A day in the life at Havafeed

On any given weekday at 3:30 am, Havafeed’s founders Lindsay & Robyn Burch wake up and prepare for the day ahead. By 4:00 am, the van is packed, and they leave the house to travel down to the Mermaid Beach Community Centre. At 4:30 am, all the volunteers begin setting up the tables and chairs for the day ahead. By 5:30 am, the preparation for breakfast begins. This morning, steak sandwiches with bacon, egg, lettuce, and beetroot are on the menu. Fun fact, on average, we go through 10 kilos of bacon a week.

At 6:00 am, the doors open and the guests are welcomed into the community centre. By 6:30-7:00 am, the centre is buzzing with people. Everyone is enjoying tea, coffee and steak sandwiches. Food parcels are being made as families come in before they go to school. At 8:00 am, the doors close and the volunteers pack up the tables and clean the kitchen. By 9:00 am, the volunteers are out the door, and Lindsay & Robyn are off to collect food that has been donated by local supporters.
